If you’re about to start studying at Vic, I'd very much encourage you to get familiar with the university learning platform (Nuku) and visit your lecture theatre before lectures start. This will save you from many troubles like getting lost or feeling overwhelmed with your studies!

On the Kelburn campus, you'll find various dining options. There are cafés like Hunter Lounge and Louis Cafe, and also a sushi place - Maki Mono- and a curry place -Krishna :) Kelburn campus also has lots of vending machines. Additionally, there are nearby eateries in the Kelburn area too 🌮🍔🥗🍕🍟

I chose Biomedical Sciences because I am really interested in Human Genetics. I love thinking and studying humans and a good amount of what makes a human is their genes 🧬 it just fascinating, all these tiny microscopic things that work together to make up literally everything 🧫 I intend on becoming a geneticist, understanding the genetic indicators of certain diseases and understanding their cures. But amongst all these reasons, my favourite has to be the application of my advocacy, womens reproductive health, to my studies. The study of Biomedical Science and Human Genetics allows me to understand the "genetics" sciences side of things like birth control and STDs and the "human" behavioural side of these topics, the socio-economics surrounding the sciences.

My degree choice stems from my experience growing up and also learnings from school regarding the need for more Pacific people within the health sector. I’ve also learned a lot about the significant lack of resources and knowledge about illnesses and the paramount importance of overall wellbeing. My decision is also driven by a profound desire to be a vocal advocate for minorities, specifically within my Pacific community and other marginalized groups. My resolute commitment is to ensure that everyone, irrespective of their wellbeing, has unrestricted access to essential resources and steadfast support. Beyond my aspiration to make a meaningful impact in our community, my ultimate goal is to contribute to a life of happiness, strength, and optimal health for all.

I knew all through high school that the subjects I enjoyed the most were English and Drama, so I wanted to keep studying what I loved at university. This translated very easily into a Bachelor of Arts with majors in English Literature and Theatre, but it's definitely not as easy as that for everyone.

Kiwi culture seems to be really independent. Most of my Kiwi friends have already had multiple jobs before I even thought about applying for one. Philippine culture around working and studying has always been separate, it's either one or the other and your parents fund you till you get a job. After school, that is. But here, I found that their education system and culture has really allowed students to be able to work while studying. Earning money and managing it at a young age is truly such an important skill that I never thought too much about until reccently.

What surprised me most could be the concept of “DIY” that permeates Kiwi culture. This self-reliant attitude is reflected in many aspects of life, from home renovations, car repairs to creative problem-solving in the workplace. It speaks to a broader cultural ethos of resourcefulness and independence!!

One fascinating aspect I was amazed by the Kiwi culture is its rich Māori (indigenous people of NZ) heritage. The Māori language and tradition integrated in the country, and with influences from places like Europe and Asia, it makes NZ a diverse and unique culture. I was also surprised by how friendly and approachable people in New Zealand are. They are laid back and very welcoming. So don’t mind if a stranger comes and starts “small-talk” with you while you’re out and about!

I chose to study at Victoria University of Wellington because I liked my course curriculum and how it is paced. I also especially liked how Victoria University of Wellington has strong connections with various institutions that specialise in medical research, like the Maglahan Institute of Medical Research, and the Capital and Coast District Health Board. On a personal note, however, I found that Wellington has the same vibes as my hometown, Baguio City. They are walkable cities, mountainous, and cold (well, as cold as you can get for a tropical country). I just found that I would be able to make more of a home for myself here, in Wellington. And, so far, I seem to have been right!

I chose to study at Vic because of its reputation for high-quality education and its location. VUW offers many programs across many disciplines, and its strong International connections mean it can provide many global opportunities! Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand. The city offers many opportunities for internships and employment. Also, Wellington has a vibrant culture surrounded by stunning nature. There are many fantastic cafes and restaurants to cater to many cuisines. I highly recommend choosing Vic for your studies!

There’s heaps of study and assignment support services. Your first and key stop is Student Learning support. They offer lots of different resources and workshops to enhance your academic skills (writing, reading and actively listening skills). The Writing Hub assists with writing assignments and the Mathematics and Statistics Learning Centre provides help in those subjects. Additionally, the Library offers research assistance. Other than these, there are also PASS Sessions held by PASS Leaders who are students who have already taken a specific course, helping and guiding you within that same course, so you can learn more as well as pass it 🥰👏🏾
