About Bangor University

Founded in 1884, Bangor University, in Wales, is a nationally and internationally recognised institution of higher learning and centre of excellence. Around 11,000 students from all over the world savour the benefits of Bangor University’s distinguished tradition of academic excellence and emphasis on a memorable student experience. Bangor University’s three colleges, comprising ten academic Schools, offer courses spanning the arts, humanities, and sciences. The university has over fifty specialist research centres.

Bangor is renowned for its varied portfolio of research and teaching, and for the multicultural, diverse, and inclusive experience it provides for its students. The university features near the top of most rankings – as the number one Welsh University of the Year (Daily Mail University Guide 2024), in the top 10 in the UK by WhatUni 2023, and many more. Bangor’s research was ranked high in the government’s most recent Research Excellence Framework, in 2021, with 85 percent of research classed as world-leading (4-star) or internationally excellent (3-star).

Bangor provides students with excellent facilities for academics and recreational life. The university’s recent investments in facilities include the Pontio Arts and Innovation Centre, which includes teaching facilities, a cinema, theatre, an innovation space, and cafes, and also houses the students’ union. There are also more than 150 students’ societies and union clubs, catering to a range of activities, sports and general interests and skills, such as music, drama, photography and film.

Bangor University is located on the beautiful North Wales coast, between the Snowdonia Mountains and the Menai Strait, and is surrounded by nature while also being well-connected to major cities such as Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Cardiff, and London.

Graduate outcomes

Bangor University values providing students with more than just a qualification on paper, and so strives to offer a broad range of resources related to employability. Students won’t just learn academic material, but will graduate from the university with improved confidence, a wider skillset, and a clear path and vision to their own success.

This includes traditional careers support and guidance, giving students the opportunity to learn key skills related to job applications and interviewing, as well as speak to mentors on a 1-to-1 basis to explore the varied paths open.

It also looks at supporting students through other means – including the BUILT awards, which help to develop key entrepreneurial skills for students who may be considering starting up their own businesses upon graduation. The university also provides opportunities to secure work experience roles, placements, and internships, giving students relevant skills and connections with potential future employers.

What’s new

At Bangor University, innovation and development never stands still. There is a continued push to provide students with the best opportunities and resources, to help ensure that graduates have the highest chances of success when leaving the university and moving onto their next steps.

One of the prime examples of investment is the new North Wales Medical School at the university. This brand-new building is fully equipped to offer a number of medical-related qualifications, with professional-grade equipment and learning spaces tailored to the needs of the next generation of medical students. The university is now accepting applications for its first intakes at the Medical School.

The university has also worked with a selection of the biggest organizations and businesses in the world on research projects. Recent examples of the exciting studies conducted at Bangor include collaborations with Meta on mixed reality, a look at understanding how to overcome limitation of 5G networks and tackling obesity related problems.
