Established in 1976 as a School of Medicine, St. George’s University (SGU) in Grenada, West Indies, has flourished and grown into a hub of international education over the years, drawing students from 150 countries to the Caribbean island.1 The University aims to bring together top talent from all over the globe and become a center for academic excellence. SGU has a network of over 22,000 School of Medicine graduates around the world.1
St. George’s University School of Medicine (SGUSOM) is accredited by the Grenada Medical and Dental Council (GMDC). GMDC has been recognized by the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME). The WFME’s recognition of GMDC ensures that SGUSOM students will continue to have access to the USMLE, participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP), and apply for licensure to practice medicine in the US. SGU also offers students the unique opportunity to begin their medical education in Grenada or the UK. The two paths feature the same curriculum and provide a strong foundation for SGU’s future physicians. In the last two years, students have the option of doing clinical rotations either in the US or the UK. A student who makes full use of all the clinical opportunities at SGU will graduate having experienced medicine as it is practiced and taught in Grenada, the US, and the UK.
Students at SGU can begin their academic journey at the breath-taking seaside campus, housing over 65 buildings which beautifully combine Georgian architecture with the vivid colors of the Caribbean.
1 Based on the number of students who have completed the Doctor of Medicine program from 1981-2023.
1 As the medical school graduating the largest number of students per year, SGU places the largest number of graduates into residency programs each year, based on internal SGU graduate/expected graduate and residency placement data as of March 2024.
2 According to US News and World Report, 2023-2024.
3 According to FSMB physician licensure data, 2021.
4 Average of 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 residency placement rates. Residency placement rate is defined as the total number of international students/graduates (non-US or Canadian) who obtained a US residency divided by the total number of international students/graduates who applied to a US residency program in a given year as of April 2024.
These figures are based on 2024-2025 academic year rates and are subject to change. Historically rates have increased annually, and students are expected to plan accordingly. All figures are in US dollars.
International students may be eligible for various scholarships, grants and bursaries. This includes the Global Scholars Bursary and the International Peace Bursary.
Global Scholars Bursary – Students may receive partial-tuition awards when joining the Four-Year MD Program with St. George’s University of Grenada School of Medicine/Northumbria University (SGU/NU). To be eligible, students must demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. These awards are grants-in-aid and do not have to be repaid.
International Peace Bursary – Students may receive partial-tuition awards to support their work towards enhancing medical care systems. To be eligible, students must demonstrate financial need and the ability to fund the rest of the tuition fees. These awards are grants-in-aid and do not have to be repaid.
There is a range of entry options for students from all academic backgrounds.

International students are exempt from the MCAT admission requirement.
SGU’s School of Medicine (SOM) has received accreditation for decades, and as a result, the university’s medical graduates have continuously been eligible to practice in the US. The Grenada Medical and Dental Council (GMDC), SGU SOM’s accreditor, is recognized by the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME) and the U.S. National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA). The WFME’s recognition of GMDC ensures that SGU SOM students have access to USMLE Step exams, US clinical rotations, eligibility for US residency placement, and the physician licensing process in the US and many other countries worldwide.
Students entering with a bachelor’s degree can follow the traditional Four-Year MD program. There are also three preclinical tracks leading to the Four-Year MD program. The preclinical phase includes coursework that prepares students for medical school.
The preclinical phase prepares students for the advanced medical phase later in the MD program. It includes the study of preclinical sciences, humanities, and social sciences.
Basic Sciences are the first two years of the Four-Year MD program. Students can complete the entire two years in Grenada, or partly in the UK at Northumbria University. Teaching is through traditional lectures, laboratory sessions, small–group sessions, and case-based learning exercises. Faculties include:
The final two years are spent at hospitals and clinics across the US and UK. This is alongside learning through lectures, small group sessions, and directed study. Faculties include:
The Grenada campus is situated on a southwestern peninsula of the Caribbean island. There are 65 buildings across the seaside location, which combine Georgian architecture and vibrant Caribbean colors. The campus features the latest facilities, such as:
