The first public university to be established to the west of the Mississippi river, the University of Missouri (MU) now welcomes students from 100 different countries. Founded in 1839, the University, also called Mizzou, has 30,000 students, many of whom are from China, South Korea and India. Around 2,000 international students are currently pursuing different degree options at the University.
Mizzou consists of 19 schools and colleges through which it offers more than 300 degree programmes. The University’s accomplished faculty attract about 70% of the state’s revenue for research in public universities. MU’s faculty spends around USD 248 million on scientific research, and the University is a member of the Association of American Universities.
The main campus is set on 1,262 acres and has been declared a botanic garden with around 42,000 plants and trees. Several buildings on campus are known for their historic significance. There are various subject-specific libraries and museums and galleries that showcase the rich history of Missouri. Accommodation is available for international students in the form of residence halls and apartment-style housing. Mizzou has a very active athletics culture and the University offers state-of-the-art facilities to support sporty students.
International students have access to a variety of scholarships, including institutional, merit, departmental and more. MU also offers students on-campus work opportunities to support tuition and accommodation costs. Mizzou’s career resources help students find jobs during their duration of study and after completion.
Support is available to students from international student ambassadors who speak different languages and through the International Centre and Career Centre. These support services help students adjust to life on campus, socialise and discover work options.
The University of Missouri’s online graduate education degree programmes have been designated as among the best in the country, according to the U.S. News & World Report 2018 Best Online Programmes Rankings.
Mizzou’s online master of education programmes ranked higher than any other institution in Missouri. The College of Education offerings climbed 25 positions since the previous year’s rankings, meaning it is now tying in 36th place in the U.S.
“Our online students often share stories about the quality of the content and teaching in these programmes. Our priorities on student engagement, excellent student services, quality courses, how long it takes students to degree completion and graduation rates have contributed to student success,” said Dean Kathryn Chval, College of Education.
U.S. News also ranked Mizzou’s online bachelor programmes in the top 40 percent of all undergraduate online programmes. MU offers 10 online bachelor’s programmes, ranging from business administration to hospitality management and health sciences.
The University offers various programmes through several Schools and Colleges, including:

The College of Arts and Science is the oldest and largest academic division in the University. The majority of the University’s undergraduates are enrolled in the College, which provides undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in humanities, fine and performing arts, and social, behavioural and natural sciences.
