Medicine

Although the two best universities for medicine in the UK are unchanged from last year, there has been lots of movement in the rest of the top 10. Notably, Queen Mary University of London is a new entrant, climbing seven places into the top five. It is just behind another fast mover with a regal name, Queen's University Belfast – the top university in Northern Ireland.

Computer science

Oxford overtakes Cambridge to take the title of the UK's top university for computer science. With professors including World Wide Web pioneer Tim Berners-Lee – himself an Oxford graduate – there is no doubting the institution's strength in the field. The top 10 is dominated by universities in England, including new entrant Bristol. The only non-English institution is St Andrews, the oldest and best university in Scotland.

Business and management studies

Home to the renowned Saïd Business School, Oxford holds off strong competition from St Andrews to keep its position as the UK's best university for business studies. The latter and third-placed Bath are the only ones in the top 10 that do not belong to the prestigious Russell Group. The list is also positive for South West England, with appearances from three of its universities: Bath, Bristol and Exeter.

Mechanical engineering

STEM-focused Imperial College London has regained its rank as the UK's top university for mechanical engineering. The institution – where international students make up more than half of learners – is one of five to climb in this year's top 10. All in this part of the list are English, covering several regions. Notable new entrants are Midlands universities Birmingham and Loughborough, which both climb three places.
