There are around 10 million job openings in America, underlining its reputation as a land of opportunity. However, that opportunity is not spread equally across the country. While the variety of careers on offer is astounding, their availability is greater in some cities and regions than others. Choosing the right one for you will depend on the kind of work you would like, but for an overview of the situation nationally, we can help. Read on to discover the cities with the best job markets in the USA.

How are cities' job markets measured?

Given the many aspects of a major city's job market, and how a person's experience of it will depend greatly on their circumstances, it is difficult to define exactly which is the strongest. As such, this article uses growth in the number of jobs in a city as a simple indicator of how much opportunity it offers to those seeking employment.

Understanding which city is best for you will require a closer look at the details and the nature of the jobs available there. However, using data from the country's Bureau of Labor Statistics, we are able to give you an introduction to five of the best job markets in the USA.

Austin, Texas

With its number of roles growing by 14.3 per cent between January 2020 and April 2023, Austin's job market shows great promise. There were a total of 1.3 million jobs in and around the city at the end of that period, spanning a range of sectors.

Some of America's biggest businesses have their headquarters in the Austin area, making it a top place for top jobs. The technology companies Dell, Oracle and Tesla are just three such companies that could offer you a career. In addition, the city is home to the employment search website Indeed – proof, if it were still needed, that this place knows about jobs.

If you want to study in Austin before working there, you should look first at the University of Texas at Austin. With more than 50,000 students, this institution is the second biggest in the state, and the most highly rated. In the Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2024, it placed 52nd in the world.

Dallas, Texas

The number of jobs in Dallas grew by 9.9 per cent to an enormous 4.2 million between 2020 and 2023. This equates to an increase of 383,000 roles, which was the largest of any city in the country. On the basis of these numbers, there is every chance that it may have the job for you.

Major employers in the city include AT&T – one of the world's biggest telecommunications companies – and Southwest Airlines, which is the planet's largest low-cost flight carrier. Like the many other top-tier businesses in the area, both are always looking for talented graduates from a range of fields to fill positions in a range of operational areas.

For getting a degree in Dallas that could lead you to one of these roles, you could investigate the University of Texas at Dallas. This is the biggest university in the city, and has been home to four Nobel Prize winners. Their careers advice centre is highly active, and offers specialised support to international students.

Tampa, Florida

Job growth in Tampa was recorded at 8.7 per cent between 2020 and 2023, resulting in a total of 1.5 million roles.

Some of Florida's largest businesses are based in the Tampa area. For anyone interested in electronic engineering, there is Jabil – one of the world's major electronics manufacturing companies – while the financially minded can look to Raymond James. Thousands of people are employed locally by this investment bank, which is the biggest in the state, and one of the 40 biggest nationally.

Several universities are based in the city, with the most notable being the University of South Florida. Around 50,000 students are enrolled there, with almost one in eight being international, and all able to benefit from its enterprising nature. This year, Times Higher Education rated it as the USA's top university for commitment to industry, innnovation and infrastructure.

Of course, Florida is also home to a number of other top university cities. Explore one of the most popular in our student guide to Gainesville.

Nashville, Tennessee

The number of jobs in Nashville rose by more than 90,000 in the three years since 2020, which was an increase of 8.6 per cent.

Jobs in the city hit top gear at the North American headquarters of tyre manufacturers Bridgestone and automobile giants Nissan. The latter are based in the nearby city of Franklin, which is close enough to be combined with Nashville in official statistics.

Elsewhere, the city is home to one of Amazon's largest corporate offices. The company recently established it as the centre of its operations in the southeast of the USA, and plans to offer more than 5,000 technical and non-technical jobs locally.

The most widely recognised university in Nashville is Vanderbilt. This 150-year-old institution places inside the top 100 of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and has a particularly strong reputation in the fields of medicine, law and education. However, having its name in your job application is likely to impress employers across all sectors.

Nashville is just one of many great places in a part of the country that contains some of its most dynamic cities. Discover more of them in our student guide to southeast USA.

Phoenix, Arizona

By the time you get to Phoenix, you can expect job numbers will be healthy. They grew by 6.8 per cent from 2020 to 2023, reaching 2.4 million in total.

You can also expect true hospitality. One of the world's most famous hotel chains, Best Western, is headquartered in the city, while many other top companies are ready to extend a warm welcome to international graduates. Those who could offer you work include Honeywell – whose aerospace division is based locally – and Avnet, which is one of the oldest tech firms in the USA.

Although it is mostly based in the neighbouring city of Tempe – a short, ten-mile trip away – Arizona State University is the most well-known higher education institution in Phoenix. More than 11,000 of its on-campus students can be found in the city, with even more heading to it regularly to enjoy what it has to offer.

On an careers front, the QS World University Rankings 2024 rate it as having the 38th best reputation with employers in the whole of America. This places it ahead of many well-known names, including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Dartmouth College.

Keen to head to one of America's warmer cities? Phoenix is just one of many you will find in our student guide to southwest USA.

Which cities have the lowest unemployment in the USA?

As of August 2023, the large city with the lowest unemployment rate in the USA was Baltimore, where only 1.8 per cent of people were classed as unemployed.

This figure comes from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics list of unemployment rates in Large Metropolitan Areas. These regions are defined by having a population in excess of one million.

The table below shows the cities where unemployment is next lowest, and offers an alternative view on which cities have the strongest job markets in the USA.

City Rank by lowest unemployment rate Unemployment rate (per cent)
Baltimore, Maryland 1 1.8
Birmingham, Alabama 2 2.3
Miami, Florida =3 2.6
Washington, D.C. =3 2.6
Boston, Massachusetts =5 2.7
Nashville, Tennessee =5 2.7

As discussed earlier, there are many ways to assess a city's job market. Therefore, it is always worth looking beyond the headline figures to understand the nature of work in any given place. Some cities may be stronger than others for job-seekers in your field of interest, and this is something you should keep in mind.
