The Turing Scheme explained

Are you planning to study in any of the hundreds of institutions in the UK? Then you might be interested in the Turing Scheme. Wondering what it is all about? To put it simply, the Turing Scheme is a programme by the UK government for students from the UK to study and work abroad.

Studying abroad needn’t be only about academics. It can also serve as an opportunity to experience different cultures, explore new locations and develop your skills. By deciding to study in the UK, you have already taken the first step in this direction. 1.What is the Turing Scheme?

The Turing Scheme was introduced as a replacement for the Erasmus+ programme after the UK left the EU. The Turing Scheme offers funds to organisations in the educational sector, which includes higher education institutions too. The funding will be provided to arrange placements or exchanges. These study or traineeship placements can last for four years to 12 months. It is the institutions that have to submit the applications to the Scheme. Students are the participants of the project proposed by the institutions.

2.How does the Turing Scheme work?

• The Turing Scheme is a government programme and it offers funding opportunities to organisations that fall under the higher education, schools or vocational education sectors.
• The institutions under the Higher Education sector should be officially registered in the UK or a British Overseas Territory.
• There are certain eligibility criteria and if the organization meets the criteria, they can apply for funding through the Turing Scheme.
• As part of the application, the organisations will have to detail the project that they intend to work on, the participants, budget details etc. Students become the participants of these projects.
• The project should be one that offers the opportunity for students to study or work abroad.
• Participants will be sent to a non-UK higher education provider or a non-UK public or private organization in the labour market.

The project will be assessed based on the objectives of the project and what are the chances of meeting those objectives.

3.How will the Turing Scheme benefit me?

4.Am I eligible for the Turing Scheme?

To be eligible to apply for the Turing Scheme funding through your university, you just need to meet any of the below criteria:

• As a participant, you should be either a full-time or part-time student. International students included (You needn’t be a UK national).
• Recent graduates can also apply to be participants.
• You are a further education (FE) or vocational education learner (VET) or a recent graduate (within the last 12 months).

Those who have already graduated can apply for a traineeship abroad. Existing students can apply for traineeship or studies. The application for the scheme will be submitted by the institution. Students cannot directly apply for the Turing Scheme funding support. You just have to make sure you meet the visa requirements of the country you go to.

5.What does the scheme cover?

The scheme covers:

• Travel expenses
• Cost of living
• Administrative funding for delivering the projects

The amount of funding provided to each participant ranges from GBP 136 per week to GBP 380 per month, depending on the duration of stay, the destination country and the sector. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds will be eligible for additional support.
