International students are welcome to study in the UK

As the UK held its general election on July 4, Indian students eagerly awaited the outcome to see who would take office and what their policies on immigration and international students would be. Much to the relief of those planning to study abroad, the UK government has pledged their support for international students. As the Secretary of State for Education, the Rt Hon Bridget Phillipson MP delivered the keynote address during the Education Embassy Conference at King’s College, London, she confirmed:

“Be in no doubt, international students are welcome in the UK. This new government values their contribution to our universities, to our communities, to our country”

 Here is what we know so far and what the latest developments mean for international students.

What does this mean for international students?

There was much speculation about policy changes and how these would impact students. The UK government acknowledged the significant contributions international students make to their communities. They believe that the country wouldn’t be the same without them. 

This assurance also means that:

• International students are welcome to make the best use of the high-quality education offered by universities in the UK. 
• The Graduate Visa Route will remain unchanged. Most graduates can stay in the UK for two years after graduation. Those with doctoral degrees or PhDs are eligible for a post-study work visa valid for three years. Explore our article for more details about the Graduate Route.

It is worth noting that:

• The UK is home to some of the best universities in the world. 164 universities from the UK made it to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024.
• London was ranked as the best student city in the world! Eight cities from the UK are in the top 50 Best Student Cities in the World 2025 (QS).

The UK government plans to manage migration carefully but reiterates that opportunities are available to everyone.
