A quick recap: The Hotcourses Diversity Index or HDI is a tool to assess the diversity of international students studying at a university abroad. This tool will be your guide to help you find how vast the community of a university abroad is and could help in bringing some solace to your small beating heart which is eager to know if the community comprises your nationality or not (possible!).

The HDI tool has two dimensions – the Diversity Index and Feel at Home Index. This article includes data compiled from the latter index.  

What we did? 

Using the tool, we took the data to figure out the percentage of Indian students studying both postgraduate and undergraduate degrees at universities in New Zealand. So if you are keen to study in New Zealand, maybe you are also keen to know where most people of your nationality study in the country.

The list of universities in New Zealand where a majority of Indian students go for their postgraduate studies:

  1. Toi-Ohomai Institute of Technology – the most sought-after university by Indian students in New Zealand is the Tai-Ohomai Institute of Technology. It is home to nearly 86.2% of international students from India.
  2. Auckland University of Technology – The Auckland University of Technology is home to nearly 16.8% of international students from India.
  3. University of Canterbury – Nearly 14.8% of international students from India study at the University of Canterbury.
  4. University of Otago – Nearly 12.6% of international students from India study at the University of Otago.
  5. University of Auckland – Nearly 12.07% of international students from India study at the University of Auckland.
  6. The University of Waikato – 11% of international students from India study at the University of Waikato.
  7. Wintec – 7% of international students from India study at the Wintec.
  8. Lincoln University – Nearly 6.3% of international students from India study at the Lincoln University.
  9. Unitec Institute of Technology – Nearly 5.1% of international students from India study at the Unitec Institute of Technology.
  10. Massey University – 5% of international students from India study at the Massey University.
  11. Victoria University of Wellington – Nearly 4.45% of international students from India study at the Victoria University of Wellington.

  1. Universal College of Learning – the Universal College of Learning (UCOL) has 62% of international students from India.
  2. Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology – 51% of international students from India are at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology.
  3. Southern Institute of Technology – Nearly 42.2% of international students from India are at the Southern Institute of Technology.
  4. Wellington Institute of Technology– Nearly 40.53% of international students from India are at the Wellington Institute of Technology.
  5. NorthTec – Nearly 31.22% of international students from India are at the NorthTec.
  6. Whitireia New Zealand – Nearly 16.46% of international students from India are at the Whitireia New Zealand.
  7. Eastern Institute of Technology – Nearly 16.44% of international students from India are at the Eastern Institute of Technology.
  8. Manukau Institute of Technology – Nearly 14.8% of international students from India are at the Manukau Institute of Technology.
  9. Otago Polytechnic – 7% of international students from India are at the Otago Polytechnic.
