scholarships to study abroad for women

Hey woman! Yeah, YOU - with the dream to study abroad! Did you know that although 21.2% of Fortune 500 companies’ board seats are occupied by women, only 4.8% of the CEOs are women. A lot of this has to do with the lack of funds to educate women in today’s world. Thankfully for all of us, there are plenty of organizations that work towards offering women fellowships and scholarships to study abroad. These grants are provided based on several criteria – including the subject of education, level of education, talent of the applicant and the community and economical background of the applicant.

In this article, we’ll tell you all about the top five scholarships to study abroad. So, don’t let the cost come in between you and your dream. Explore the scholarships that’s best suitable for you:

Margaret McNamara Education Grants

The Margaret McNamara Education Grants - with an objective to promote the professional status, rights and wellbeing of women around the world - provides scholarship programmes for women aged 25 and above, pursuing education in Canada, the US, or select universities in Latin American and South Africa.

If you wish to apply, you must:

  • hail from a “lower or middle-income developing member country”. Since India is a middle-income developing nation, you’ll be eligible in this regard.
  • demonstrate a commitment towards bettering the lives of children and women.

American Association of University Women (AAUW)

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) presents seven unique kinds of fellowship and grants for women. One among them is its International Fellowships. The International Fellowships are granted to women from any country outside the US, who wish to pursue full-time study or research in any of the accredited US institutions. Studies at both undergraduate or postgraduate are supported.

PEO International

PEO International is a US-based organisation that runs six projects committed to aiding women in furthering their education. Women from outside of the US and Canada hoping to study postgraduate level programmes in either of these two countries, can benefit from the international scholarships worth USD 12,500 provided by the PEO International Peace Scholarship Fund.

L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Programme

The L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Programme grants five international fellowships at the value of GBP 15,000 every year to women taking up postdoctoral research study in the field of life sciences at any of universities or institutes in the UK or Ireland.

The aim of this programme is to help young and budding researchers widen their exposure and expertise, by encouraging them to spend their time at a prominent research centre outside of their native country.

Schlumberger Foundation

The Schlumberger Foundation is a non-profit organisation that offers support for women pursuing education in the field of science and technology. Its leading ‘Faculty for the Future’ programme grants fellowships to women towards education in postdoctoral or PhD levels in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) at universities around the world.

Women hailing from emerging and developing economies are eligible for the fellowship. Recipients are chosen based on both leadership potential and scientific talents. The grant sum is finalised based on the cost involved in the study – worth up to USD 50,000 per year.
