12 ways how life changes when studying in the USA

‘The American Dream’ is a concept or rather a process that’s been drilled down into our heads for a long time. It typically involves one to excel in academics, get a job in a reputed firm work for a few years here in India and then get an opportunity to go on-site in the USA and settle there! This is one way to fulfil the dream.

The other way that’s gaining prominence is to excel in your studies in India, apply to a premier institution in the USA, study there, maintain your top-notch academic score, find a job in the USA on graduation and get a work permit and live there.

This article is a bitter-sweet humorous take on life as an international student in the USA!

Everything seems new and different; you are a bit scared and tremendously happy at the same time. It is an inexplicable feeling!

Rushing to the International Students Office to get all the paperwork done so you can settle into university life with ease; and make friends in the Student Orientation Programme.

Every time you look at buying something you sit and analyse the prices as you convert the dollar value to your currency and wonder if you should spend money or not???

The portions of food at restaurants are huge and you wonder how in God’s name you are going to finish the food being served on your plate! Then slowly you get used to the gastronomic revolution that is the USA!

Your style of English changes as you begin to get the accent and your friends and family back home start mocking you!! Yes, it happens!!!

You get the weird stares from your classmates and the people you meet when you use a phrase that is common in your country but has a different context altogether in the USA!

The culture shock in terms of public display of affection, the kisses, the hugs and same-sex couples can be a bit unnerving!

You become more attuned to American holidays and festivals cricket and football get replaced by basketball and baseball and American soccer tournaments!

WhatsApp, Skype, FB Messenger and all forms of communication tools and apps on your phone and laptop are constantly abuzz!

Your friends back home keep taunting you with pics of awesome get-togethers and first day first show movie shows and birthday parties. Not to be outdone you put up pics of your awesome life in America with pics of you visiting New York, the Niagara Falls, Disneyland and the Grand Canyon.

You forget all hatred and bond together in the Asian students association at University and spend festivals together and have fun dancing to SRK numbers on Bollywood Night!

Despite everything you will feel a bit homesick. So keep in touch with family and friends and focus on your studies and get a good academic score. Enjoy your time in the USA but don’t lose sight of your academic and professional goals.
