What is the full form of SOP?

The full form of SOP is 'Statement of Purpose' (in the field of education). It is also referred to by several other names such as:

  • Personal Statement
  • Admission Essay
  • Application Essay and
  • Letter of Intent

What is SOP?

SOP is a written document that students should submit along with their university applications, that talks about their motivation, goals and eligibility for pursuing a course/programme. An SOP is an opportunity to talk about your strengths, aspirations and experiences that are typically not covered in a CV. SOP is where you can highlight your achievements that cannot be captured by your certificates. (Check out our video below; you'll get a good idea about what to include in your SOP)

What is the purpose of an SOP?

An SOP is useful for a student to elaborate on themselves beyond their academic profile. For universities, it is useful for filtering through hundreds of applications and picking that student whose profile aligns with their expectations.

What is the importance of an SOP?

The importance of an SOP is that it can decide the fate of a student’s university application. It can either convince the admission committee that you are the ideal candidate for that one seat available for the course or, disappoint them, eventually leading to rejection. Sometimes, even though you have the best academic profile, a sloppy SOP can leave a bad impression making the admission team doubt your eligibility for the course.

How is an SOP important for a student?

Opportunity to talk about motivations and aspirations for choosing the course: When an Indian student makes the decision to study abroad, they would have done extensive research before and after deciding the programme to pursue. They might have a strong motivation behind the decision, which in most cases is their passion for the subject. This cannot be conveyed in any other document other than the SOP. So do not restrict yourself; articulate in the most powerful yet succinct way to convince the admission committee that you are immensely passionate about the said course.

Chance to highlight your achievements and qualifications: Your CV might carry a lot of information. The ones most relevant to your course might get lost among all the other details in the document. Through an SOP, you can highlight the details that you don’t want the admission committee to miss.

Opportunity to talk about extracurricular and volunteering work: Do you know that your volunteering work matters to institutions abroad? If you have been of service to your society, it adds to your value as a responsible citizen. If you have to get into the details of it, the SOP is the best place. The same applies to your extracurricular activities. As part of offering a well-rounded education, universities recognize the need for extracurricular activities, including sports. Most institutions have their own sports clubs and teams that compete at state and national levels. So highlighting your extracurricular activities is quite important.

Talk about how you are the right fit for the programme: Serving more like a conclusion, you can reflect on the points covered in the SOP to convince the admission committee that you are the best candidate for this programme.

How is an SOP important for a university?

Demonstrates candidate's fit: An SOP is where candidates emphasize and support their claims as to why they are the ideal fit for the programme. This helps institutions in making the right choice.

Helps proceed with their selection with confidence: Institutions have no other way to learn about prospective international students other than through the documents they submit. Some of them ask for interviews, this is rare.

Helps differentiate between candidates with similar profiles: Hundreds of students, many of them from India, might apply for the same course as you. They might also have similar academic profiles. The best way for them to differentiate between profiles and pick the best matching candidate will be by evaluating their SOPs.
