The Master of Science in Information Systems or MIS is a niche postgraduate programme that combines the best of computer science, analytics and management skills. Did you know that the ‘Forbes Magazine’ has listed the MIS programme to be the fourth best postgraduate degree option for a safe and secure high-paying professional job?
MIS graduates are in great demand by firms in the information services sector of the economy, software development organisations, management consultants, and MIS departments across industries ranging from automobiles to food-processing and petro-chemicals to pharmaceuticals.
The QS World Rankings for top-ranking institutions in the USA offering the MIS programme show no surprises; all leading tech-universities feature in the top-10. The institutions are:
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
- Carnegie Mellon University
- Harvard University
- University of California, Berkeley (UCB)
- Princeton University
- University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)
- Cornell University
- University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
- California Institute of Technology (Caltech)
- University of Washington
Costs:
Small to mid-size universities, charge US$25,000 to US$30,000 per year for the MIS programme. Larger universities may charge somewhere close to US$ 35,000 to US$40,000 for the programme. You also need to factor in the cost of living, accommodation, food and entertainment expenses.
If you aspire to join an MIS programme in the USA during the January 2016 intake, then you should start your preparations now itself. Ideally you should have completed your undergraduate degree with a good academic score and should be preparing for your IELTS and GRE/GMAT. Most institutions accept the GRE score and a number of institutions also accept the GMAT score in lieu of the GRE. Applicants are advised to ascertain which test score is accepted and what are the basic scores required to be considered for admission.
The basic entry score varies from 300 to 330 on the GRE based on the institution that you choose to apply. Typically students will be required to score 6.5 or above on the IELTS with a minimum score of 6.0 in all components of the test.
Ensure that you apply to the institutions of your choice, well before the deadline date and submit all required documents like your academic transcripts, statement of purpose, letter of recommendation and proof of financial ability. If you are eligible to apply for a scholarship then you may mention your preference in the application form. Some institutions may require you to apply separately for a scholarship.
