Deciding to study abroad is a big step. Figuring out when you go can be as confusing as deciding where to go. In India, universities generally offer a single intake, and a semester lasts for 6 months. But international universities offer multiple intakes or semesters throughout the year.
Most universities have two main intakes: Fall and Spring. Some also offer a Summer or Winter intake for specific courses.
But which one is right for you? Should you apply for the popular Fall semester or wait for the Spring? This guide breaks down the start dates, pros and cons, and deadlines for the top study destinations, including the USA, the UK and Australia.
The three major intakes at a glance
Here is the general semesters or intakes offered by foreign universities:
| Intake | Semester season | Generally starts | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary Intake | Fall | August/September | Wide course selection, multiple scholarships, and traditional 'campus life' experience. |
| Primary Intake | Spring/Winter | January/February | Students who need more time for visa/exams, or who missed the Fall deadline. |
| Short Intake | Summer | May/June | Diploma courses, language programmes, or bridging courses. Not common for full degrees. |
Why should you be aware of the different semesters in different countries?
- It will help you better plan your study abroad journey. You will know when to apply to join a particular semester at the university.
- You will have greater clarity about the available options and make informed decisions based on them.
Semesters in the USA
The U.S. higher education system offers the most flexibility and also has the most variations. Their academic calendar is divided into the Fall and Spring semesters. In addition to these, some institutions might offer a short summer semester. Most U.S. universities follow the standard Semester System, but some follow the Quarter System.
1. The Fall Semester (August - December)
- Status: The most popular intake. This is also the first semester of the academic year. Sometimes called the Autumn Semester.
- Why choose it: Most courses are open, and the most financial aid is distributed during this semester. Universities conduct Orientation week (or 'Welcome Week'), which is a massive event, making it easier to make friends.
- Deadlines: Usually between December and March of the previous year.
2. The Spring Semester (January - May)
- Status: The second largest intake
- Why choose it: If you didn't get your IELTS/TOEFL scores in time for Fall, this is your next best option. Classes are slightly smaller, offering more faculty attention.
- Deadline: Usually between July and October of the previous year.
3. The Summer Semester (May - August)
- Status: Limited availability
- Why choose it: Ideal for short-term courses.
Important note on internships (CPT) in the USA:
If you are aiming for internships (Curricular Practical Training), the Fall semester is often better. The U.S. immigration rules require you to complete two full semesters (9 months) before you can work off-campus. Fall students can intern the following Summer. Spring students may have to wait longer. For more information about CPT vs OPT, explore our article.

Semesters in the UK
The UK academic year aligns closely with the USA, but is more rigid regarding start dates. Many universities in the UK operate on a term-based system. Their academic year typically starts in September.

If the institution follows the semester system, semester 1 is from September to December and semester 2 is from January to June.
What are the major application deadlines in the UK?
Autumn/Fall Intake: Starts in September/October. The September intake in the UK is the standard entry point for 95% of undergraduate and master's degrees. If you want the 'full' university experience, aim for this intake. It is also the intake you should opt for if you are applying for a medicine, veterinary medicine or dentistry programme. This intake is opted for by the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge for the courses offered by them.
For courses in medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine, classes beginning in September 2026, and your application should be in by 15 October 2025. For most other undergraduate courses, 14 January 2026 is the deadline, as specified on the UCAS website.
For more information, please refer to the article on the intakes in the UK and the institutions offering these intakes.
Here's the summary of the information you need:
• Winter (January) Intake: Starts in January/February. Growing in popularity for Business and Management Master's degrees, but options for undergraduates are limited.
• Summer Intake: Rare for full degrees. Usually reserved for Pathway programs or PhD research tracks.
Semesters in Australia
The intake periods in Australia are also known as trimesters. Most institutions have two major semesters, while some others might have an additional third semester/trimester. This depends on the courses on offer. Unlike in the UK and the USA, semesters in Australia are not referred to by the seasons. Because Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, its seasons are flipped, and so is its academic calendar! The academic year at Australian universities begins in late February or early March.
There are three semesters or trimesters in Australia.
|
Semester |
Months |
|
Semester 1 |
Late February or early March to late May or early June |
|
Semester 2 |
Late July or early August to November |
|
Semester 3 |
December to February |
• Semester 1 (The Big One): Starts in February/March (This is their 'Autumn'). This is the start of the academic year in Australia.
• Semester 2: Starts in July. This acts as the mid-year intake.
What are the application deadlines?
It is ideal to send in your applications a few months before the intake begins. For example, if you want to be considered for the first semester, send in your applications by October or November of the previous year. For the second semester, applications should be submitted between March and May. You may have until May to send in your applications for the third-semester intake.

Semesters in Canada
In Canada, the academic year starts in September and continues until the end of April or early May. Canada is very similar to the US model, but places a heavy emphasis on 'Co-op' (work experience) timing. Most institutions offer a large number of courses during this semester.

What are the major intakes in Canada
• Fall Intake: Starts in September. Best for students who want to secure Co-op work permits immediately after their first year.
• Winter Intake: Starts in January. A great option, but consider the weather before making a decision. In very cold regions, moving in January means arriving in deep winter!
It is best to send in your applications a few months before the intake begins. For the September intake or the Fall intake, you can send in your applications starting in January. Some institutions might accept applications up to June.
For the Winter intake, the best time to apply would be between July and October. Since the Summer intake is a short window, check with your institution or our counsellors for accurate information on application deadlines.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Is the Spring semester degree valued less than the Fall semester?
Ans: No, they are valued the same. Your degree certificate looks exactly the same regardless of when you started. The only difference is your graduation date.
Q: What is the Winter Semester?
Ans: In the US and Canada, 'Winter Semester' is often used interchangeably with the Spring semester (starting in January). However, in some universities, 'Winter' refers to a very short 3-week term in December/January for extra credits.
Q: Can I apply for scholarships if I join in the Spring?
Ans: Yes, but available funding is generally smaller. Many major entrance scholarships are awarded to the Fall cohort, so you may have to rely more on external scholarships or country-specific aid.
When should I start preparing for the Fall 2026 intake?
Ideally, you should start preparing 10-12 months in advance. For Fall 2026, start researching universities in August/September 2025.
