Factors to consider when opting for a deferred MBA

  • Deferred MBA programmes receive a high volume of applications, so keep track of application deadlines and send in your application well in advance.
  • Take the time to prepare for GMAT/GRE/English language proficiency tests so that you can score well and improve your chances of selection.
  • A deferred MBA requires a firm commitment from you to come back to study after a work stint. Think carefully before making this decision.
  • Choose your work duration and role strategically so that the experience adds significant value and serves as a solid foundation for your future MBA learning.
  • Align your work experience with your long-term career goals. For example, gaining experience in a specialised field is ideal if you plan to pursue an MBA in that area and later build a career as an expert.

Application Process for a Deferred MBA

  • Apply during your final year of undergraduate or full-time graduate study, typically in April when most deadlines fall.
  • The application process is similar to that of regular MBA programmes.
  • Your profile and application will be evaluated against other deferred MBA applicants.
  • You are required to give a detailed plan for how you intend to utilise the deferment period, and provide periodic updates during the deferment period to demonstrate progress.
  • If your application is shortlisted, you will be invited for an interview and a group discussion, both of which may be conducted virtually.
  • If accepted, you must pay an enrollment deposit by the deadline given by the university. This is generally split into two instalments: one at the time of enrollment to confirm your spot and another in the year before matriculation. These deposits are usually credited toward your tuition fees.

Why should you opt for a Deferred MBA Programme?

Deferred MBAs programmes offer several advantages, making them an attractive option for many. Here's how you can benefit:

  • Apply towards the end of your undergraduate course and secure a spot in your preferred MBA programme early.
  • Once your MBA admission is assured, you can enjoy peace of mind and work without worrying whether you can gain admission in the future.
  • Become highly sought after upon completing your MBA because you’ll have both academic credentials and work experience.
  • Having an assured deferred MBA programme admission offer signals potential employers that you are a valuable hire.
  • You will stay relevant. Your MBA won’t feel outdated compared to fresh graduates, as you’ll combine current management knowledge with practical experience.
  • Certain industries, such as biotech or private equity, value pre-MBA work experience and specialised expertise. A Deferred MBA makes you uniquely qualified for such sectors.
  • You will gain a competitive edge. You will be academically on par with fresh MBA graduates, but ahead of them due to your work experience.
  • Another unexpected benefit is that many top colleges have a lower application fee for Deferred MBA programmes, compared to regular MBA applications.
  • You may have access to the alumni network and resources, often as soon as you register, rather than waiting until the programme begins.

Fees, Deposit and Scholarships

Tuition fees:

Tuition fees for deferred MBA programmes range between $70,000 and $100,000, depending on the college you choose. You may not be able to opt for fellowships or financial aid when you apply for a deferred programme because you are not enrolling immediately. For example, at Stanford, you cannot apply for aid offered by the institution at the time of enrollment. However, you can apply in advance for external fellowships, following their specific terms, conditions and deadlines.

Application fee and deposits:

  • Application fees usually range from $100 to $250, with possible waivers for eligible students based on circumstances or background.
  • Most schools also require an enrollment deposit, often split into two instalments of around $1,000 each.

Scholarships:

An MBA abroad can be expensive for Indian students, but scholarships can significantly reduce the financial burden. For deferred MBA programmes, scholarships are typically awarded when you actually start the MBA programme, not at the time of initial enrollment. At most of the top schools, any scholarships that apply to MBA aspirants automatically apply to you at that stage.

You will be required to submit a scholarship essay and an updated CV when you enrol for the upcoming academic year. These, along with your original application details, will determine your eligibility for scholarships.

The deferred MBA is a great way to ensure that you have your place in a future cohort at a top MBA school after gaining valuable work experience. This combination of work experience and MBA is an effective way to make yourself highly valuable to employers seeking proven talent. With several top universities offering deferred MBAs, this option deserves serious consideration if you aim for a successful career in business management.
