Demystifying the Latest THE World University Rankings 2013-14

The latest Times Higher Education Rankings do not throw too many surprises at students, parents and those monitoring the higher education industry. The USA and the UK continue to hog the limelight with a number of institutions from both countries within the Top-50 institutions in the world. For the record, California Institute of Technology (Caltech) holds onto the coveted position of the world’s top-ranking university. Caltech has been at the forefront of technological and medical innovation and research for many years now and an amazing student to faculty ratio of 3:1 gives students a personalised learning experience.

What’s happening in the UK?

Going by the latest rankings; what academics and students feared for a while seems to be coming true. The quality of education apart from London, Oxford and Cambridge - ‘the golden triangle’ seems to be going down. University of Oxford holds onto its world number two ranking (shared with Harvard), Cambridge maintains 7th place in the world and Imperial College London keeps a top ten position. The UK is the strongest higher education nation in the world outside the US, with 31 world top 200 universities (49 in the top 400)

Asian Snapshot:

A positive trend that has been emerging in the past four to five years is the steady rise of Asian institutions in the ‘Top 200’ institutions in the world. China, South Korea, Singapore and Japan all make their presence felt with an improvement in their rankings when compared to the previous years.
Japan’s University of Tokyo maintains its status as Asia’s number one and moves up four places to 23rd. The National University of Singapore holds on to second in the region, moving from 29th to 26th and overtaking Australia’s University of Melbourne in the process.
South Korea’s Seoul National University moves into the top 50 for the first time (44th), followed by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (up from 68th to 56th).
Peking University in China creeps up one place to 45th, while its close rival, Tsinghua University, rises two places to joint 50th.
The University of Hong Kong is one of the few leading East Asian institutions not to improve its position, falling eight places to 43rd. However, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (57th) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (joint 109th) both make significant gains.

Perhaps an institution from India will break into the top rankings in a few years!

Rest of Europe:

Traditional powerhouses of classical and scientific learning the institutions in Europe have taken a fall as top universities in Europe have all dropped in their rankings. While the UK’s number one, Oxford, holds on to second place in the table, almost across the board the continent’s top institutions lose ground: ETH Zürich - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich, the world number one outside the US and the UK, slips two places to 14th; Germany’s University of Munich falls out of the top 50; and it is a similar tale of woe for Belgium, France, the Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland and Austria.

The Way Ahead:

As an aspiring ‘study abroad’ student the choices that are available seem innumerable going by the number of institutions with their various courses on offer. The UK and the USA have always remained the number one favourites as higher education destinations for students from India and the neighbouring Asian countries. The rise of Singapore and Australia to a certain extent; is a fact that students and their parents have to examine. Studying in Singapore or Australia is definitely less expensive when compared to studying in the UK and the USA and things definitely look better for students planning to study abroad!
