Top 3 low cost universities to study in Australia

Hey there! It’s a great move to study in Australia! You have great universities, lovely scenic beauty and plenty of scope for employment. Yes, it’s a bit on the expensive side – Studying in any of the prestigious Group of 8 universities can cost you about INR 20 lakhs a year! But hey, did you know that there are other popular low cost universities that you can study by shelling out only 14-18 lakhs?

That’s why you’ve to right place, folks. Let me break it down for you and tell you what the 3 low cost universities are to study in Australia – bearing in mind their tuition cost and of course their scholarships.

La Trobe University

Featuring in the top 1.4% of more than 20,000 universities in the world, La Trobe University has been one of the leading institutions to deliver excellence in education for over 50 years. Based out of Melbourne, the university has additional campuses across Bendigo, Mildura and Sydney (among other places).

Home to over 8000 international students from India, Sri Lanka, China, Singapore, Nepal, etc, La Trobe is a global university. It has invested over AUD 500 million in enhancing its state-of-the-art educational facilities.

Your tuition fees at La Trobe would be roughly between 16 lakhs to 17 lakhs per year. With campus accommodation costing you up to INR 5.3 lakhs, your other overall cost of living expenses can mount to about INR 9.8 lakhs.

At La Trobe University, there are plenty of scholarships for international students to choose from. Here, take a look at few:

La Trobe College Excellence Scholarship (CES)

This scholarship is available to both undergraduate and postgraduate international students of the university - who are high-achieving, academically. Successful applicants can avail scholarships of 15%, 20% and 35% waiver of annual tuition fees. 

International students must meet set academic and English language entry requirements in order to be eligible for the scholarship.

Undergraduate and postgraduate regional campus scholarships

International students studying at any of La Trobe’s regional campuses can benefit from the regional scholarships worth up to AUD 5,000. Eligibility criteria include meeting the minimum academic and English language conditions required for the programme. The applicant must also possess an unconditional offer for a postgraduate or undergraduate programme at any of the university’s regional campuses.

Postgraduate Research Scholarships

International students at postgraduate level programmes can avail these scholarships, which can fund their tuition fees and perhaps also, offer stipend to support their living expenses. International students applying for postgraduate research programmes and PhD can also benefit from many other scholarships that include the La Trobe University Full Fee Research Scholarships (LTUFFRS) and the La Trobe University Postgraduate Research Scholarships (LTUPRS).

Swinburne University of Technology

With a 100-year history, Swinburne University of Technology is recognised as one of the world’s most international universities. Ranked in the top 200 universities in the world (according to 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities), Swinburne University of Technology featured in the ‘QS top 100 under 50’ universities in the same year. Based in Melbourne, the university has three campuses across Australia.

If you’re a student of Swinburne, your tuition fees will range between INR 14 – 15 lakhs and your campus accommodation will cost over INR 8 lakhs. The overall cost of living will be just over INR 9 lakhs.

When you apply at Swinburne, you automatically will be considered for an international student scholarship.

Here are few of the scholarships that are available for international students:

Undergraduate degrees: Students applying for an undergraduate degree can avail this scholarship worth up to AUD 38,000. Best part about this scholarship is that the higher your academic performance, the higher your scholarship amount will be.

Postgraduate degrees: Selected students applying for any of the two-year master’s programmes can avail this scholarship of up to AUD 19,000. However, this scholarship will not available for the Master of Science (Network Systems) programme, and the Master of Information Technology (Professional Computing) programme.

Postgraduate Professional Computing and Networking Systems programmes: Selected students applying for the Master of Science (Network Systems) programme and the Master of Information Technology (Professional Computing) programme can benefit from this scholarship that’s worth AUD 2500

Postgraduate Loyalty Scholarship: This scholarship is for students graduating from an undergraduate degree in Swinburne and continuing to pursue postgraduate degree here. These students will receive a 10% reduction in tuition fees.

Central Queensland University

Ranked among the top 2% of universities in the world (according to Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018), Central Queensland University is a winner of 5-Stars for internationalisation in the QS rating system.

Its programmes are designed to be industry-relevant that makes you job-ready. Known for its international study and internships, the university boasts impressive graduate outcomes in starting salaries and employment.

At Central Queensland University, your average tuition cost per year will range anywhere between INR 13 lakhs to 14 lakhs. While the campus accommodation expenses can add up to roughly INR 5.3 lakhs, other living expenses could cost you over INR 9 lakhs.

Apart from the relatively low tuition fees, the university spends up to AUD 2.5 million every year on scholarships to financially support international students.

The International Student Scholarship can be availed by both undergraduate and postgraduate international students studying at Central Queensland University. Additionally, students studying in the regional CQAustralia campuses can avail 20% discount on their tuition fees for the entire duration of the programme – thanks to the university’s International Student Scholarship – Regional. This merit-based scholarship is rewarded, provided all eligibility criteria are met.

International students can also benefit from the many scholarships funded by the Australian Government.

Besides these three, you could also check out Deakin University and the University of Southern Queensland. You can benefit from the tuition fees at University of Southern Queensland – which is much more affordable. On the other hand, Deakin University offers scholarships that deduct 10-20% of your tuition fees if you score above 60-65% in your previous study. Wow right?
