Simple tactics to nail a perfect 340 on the GRE

Preparing for the GRE? Yes – we can tell with the look on your face as you clicked on this article (Ok. So we can’t actually see your face- but you get the point).

We know how important a role GRE plays to help you make your study in the USA dream a reality.  So stay glued to this page and your seats- because we are giving you pointers straight from Arjun Shah- 2018’s GRE topper, who scored a 340!

20 year old Arjun Shah doesn’t like to be referred to as a bright student- we were told. We find it hard not to call him that. He brimmed excitedly that at first he couldn’t believe his eyes,” "I wasn't sure. I asked some people at the centre and they confirmed that if I had seen it (the score) on the screen, it must be true."

Though the people at the center assured him he wasn’t seeing things- it wasn’t until he received the actual official score card, did it dawn on him that he had actually pulled off a 340 on the GRE.

We know you’re eager to see how.

So- let’s jump right into it- five pointers from Arjun Shah that could help you study in the USA- in your dream grad school soooooon.

The early bird gets the worm

On being asked, when he had started preparing for his GRE on Jan 2018, he revealed that he had started by October 2017. He would not spend more than three hours tops on weekends- and didn’t dive into the preparation full-on in these initial stages. He first read up on the kind of questions that would be featured on the test, reading material, improving vocabulary, and such. It was not until December 2017 that he got his exam preparation mode full-on.

Get your nerd on

The next question fired at him was about his preparation. Arjun opened up that when it came to improving his vocabulary, he maintained a book where he’d write down all the words along with its meanings- when he read them for the first time. He also said reading newspapers helped with improvement in language and better performance and speed for the comprehension section of the test.

Weakness to strength conversion formula

When asked what his weak areas were and how he improved on them, Arjun mentioned that since he was quite the wiz in mathematics- he spent more time and energy focusing on his areas of improvement- which were accuracy and speed in English- along with time management. Penciling in time for those sections of the test where he struggled to keep up- was key.

Mocking? We think not.

Arjun Shah told eager GRE prepping students from all over the country that the biggest mistake most do is overlook the time factor. One has to take the exam for nearly four hours and not allow any distractions- this is something you should seriously practice in your mock tests.  You must make time for analysis of mistakes and take on feedback after these tests- for your mocks to pave way to improvement.

Plan A? Plan B? Plan why?

Arjun Shah’s picks:

California Institute of Technology

Arjun Shah highlighted the fact that study options in his desired specialization in the USA were plenty in numbers to choose from and that the kind of state-of-the-art facilities students will find there would be among the best in the field currently.  And not to mention- the exposure to the best industries globally in the field. These were his motivating factors during his GRE preparation.

So there you have it. Plan and prepare for GRE wisely- and who knows. We could very well be writing an article about how YOU scored a 340 very soon!
