Pathways Programmes Bridge to Higher Education Abroad

What are Pathways Programmes?

Pathways Programmes are a specific set of programmes designed for international students to meet the eligibility requirements prescribed by universities for admission to their degree programmes. These usually include modules covering English, Mathematics, Computer Skills and subject-specific modules.

‘Foundation Courses’ this term is also used to refer to Pathways programmes. Typically these are one-year programmes, which are offered by universities. They focus on Humanities and Social Sciences and Science and Engineering. On completion of the Foundation programme, the student takes a test and on meeting the prescribed entry requirements, the student is granted admission to a relevant full-time undergraduate degree.

Benefits of a Pathways Programme

  • Students get more time to settle into University-life abroad
  • Ample time is on offer to improve English language skills
  • Subject-specific Foundation programmes help applicants improve their subject-skills
  • Direct progression to a full-time undergraduate programme on completion of the Foundation programme
  • Private players like Navitas have tied up with leading universities in the USA, UK, Australia and Canada to offer Pathways programmes
  • Students from countries like China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Philippines, Nigeria and the Middle East make up the largest chunk of students enrolling for Pathways programmes
  • Some institutions offer a partial scholarship in the form of discounts on tuition fee to those students who top the Pathways Programme.

Thus it is very clear that Pathways Programmes are an integral part of the international higher education industry. The advantage of the Indian education system is that in most cases applicants usually just need to meet the English language requirements prescribed by the University. Most universities offer a separate Intensive English Language programme that helps them improve their English skills.
