Should I choose a pg or pg diploma in Canada?

Are you moving to Canada for your higher education? And are you torn between two choices – Should I study a postgraduate or postgraduate diploma in Canada this year?

Canada has been a student-friendly country for a long time now. Its growing economy is an advantage for many international students to be part of the global community and explore options that add a lot of value to their career.

To figure out if you are more suited to study a pg diploma or a pg in Canada, you must know three things:

What’s the difference between a pg diploma and pg in Canada?

A pg diploma is for students who are just starting out with a new course and have no prior knowledge about it whereas a pg course is for students who have a preliminary understanding or an undergraduate degree on a course that they wish to do a postgraduate on later.

How long does it take to complete a pg diploma or a pg in Canada?

A pg diploma mostly lasts for a shorter duration compared with a pg. In Canada, a pg diploma takes around two or three semesters to complete.

On the other hand, a postgraduate in Canada can last for 2 or 3 years, depending on the subject that students opt for.

Both pg diploma and a pg in Canada have their own benefits for students.  First, both programmes are open to students from all parts of the world, and these provide a lot of opportunities for students to network around and experience a new form of education.

Second, both programmes are aligned to meet expectations of employers; therefore laying a strong foundation and helping students learn the skills and gather knowledge to become successful employable graduates in the long run.

Similarities between a pg and pg diploma in Canada

A diploma is never equivalent to a degree. Likewise a postgraduate diploma in Canada is different from a postgraduate degree. But, a major similarity between the two programmes is a pg diploma guarantees an individual to develop his or her professional skills as much as a postgraduate degree does.

Several Canadian institutes offer postgraduate courses that offer a large number of work-integrated learning options. This benefits students in finding suitable employment after graduation; therefore, boosting the graduate employability record in return.

Similarly, since a pg diploma is primarily taken up by students who want to widen their professional skills, it’s always delivered in such a way that it makes students more open to different work opportunities.

Differences between a pg and pg diploma in Canada

A pg diploma usually doesn’t involve much of thesis work and is more for students to enhance their professional skills. But, a postgraduate degree involves a lot of research work, which is followed up by a thesis.

Moreover, a pg degree covers a vast number of topics whereas a pg diploma is niche, centred on only one or two topics.
