Similar courses abroad but with different names

Similar courses are sometimes known by different names at universities and colleges abroad. The naming convention varies owing to many reasons, such as any change in the department, change in the course contents, change in faculty, etc.

Numerous students are heading to study abroad every year in the quest for good education and jobs. We see plenty of such examples, wherein the entire process repeats in itself.  One of the worries that some students face during their overseas admissions process is deciding ‘which course to choose?’ Though every student has to choose minimum three to five universities and courses, it is a herculean task for them because sometimes certain courses, which the students are already familiar with, are known by different names at universities and colleges abroad.

What’s in a name?

The naming convention of courses might vary owing to many reasons, such as any change in the department, change in the course contents, change in faculty, etc. Thus, it’s better to read a university prospectus thoroughly so that you’re aware of every course and its contents before applying.

To be on the safer side, speak to our advisors or directly to your university’s admissions committee or to your concerned department.

However, we’ll still share some details about the courses we are referring to, which might look like clones:

1. Business Studies – is a boiling soup of Economics, HR, Accounting, Finance, IT, Marketing and Statistics. If you had noticed carefully, you would have seen that overtime these course contents have been segregated and are being offered as individual subjects. And these course contents are offered as specialisations as well.

Find Masters in Business Studies abroad.

2. Biochemistry – every science stream tends to collide at the top, with increasing hierarchies, which means a student who studies chemistry will eventually study biology and physics at one point in time. And a student who studies biophysics will eventually study biochemistry at one point in time.

Hence, even though Biochemistry deals with genetics, molecular biology, sometimes stats, biophysics and thermodynamics, microbiology and cell biology, you’ll definitely find each subject offered as a single course or specialisation at a university abroad.

3. Biomedical Engineering – could be available as ‘Bio-engineering’. Does that sound familiar?

4. Public Relations – could be available at universities as Strategic Public Relations, Journalism and Public Relations, Communication (diploma or masters), etc.

5. Forensic Science – could be available as Forensic Science with Chemistry or Biology, Forensic Science with Criminology, Forensic Science and Anthropology, Forensic Science and Chemical Analysis, Forensic Science and Criminal Investigation, Forensic Science and Molecular Biology,

Some universities offer some unique programmes in Forensic Science, such as the Keele University offers Accounting and Forensic Science, Astrophysics and Forensic Science and Business Management and Forensic Science.

Check out the Forensic Science courses offered at University of Central Lancashire.

6. Architecture – could be available as the following: Architecture and Urbanism; Construction Engineering Management; Architecture, Computing & Engineering; Construction Project Management; Town Planning; Property & Facilities Management; Built Environment; Digital Architecture & Robotic Construction; International Real Estates; Building Information Modelling Management; Energy & Sustainable Building Design; Advanced Landscape & Urbanism; Zero Carbon Architecture & Retrofit Design and Structural & Concrete Engineering.

Check out some fantastic Architecture courses offered by the University of East London and London South Bank University.

7. Education and Training – could be available as courses like Education Studies, Early Childhood & Special Education, Childhood Development, Public Services and Secondary Social Studies Education.

8. International Relations (IR) – could be available as Law with IR, Business and IR, IR and Social Policy, Politics with IR, IR with Criminology, IR with Sociology, Economics with IR, Biology and IR, Environmental Studies with IR, IR with Advanced Computing and IR with English language Studies.

Check out some of the IR courses at the University of Buckingham and at the Keele University.

One way of identifying similar courses could be with their course/subject IDs. Hence, while choosing courses, when you come across similar course IDs, always check with your concerned faculty and ask them details of the contents of such (similar) courses.
