Student visa processing resumed across the world

Starting 18 June 2025, the U.S. resumed student visa processing for international students across the world.

If you are enrolling in a U.S. university where international students make up less than 15% of the total student population, your visa application will be prioritised.

J1 visa applications are also expected to be prioritised (Times of India).

Social media screening is now a mandatory step for F1, M1 and J1 visas

New visa policies include increased vetting of student profiles, with applicants expected to provide full access to their social media accounts. To facilitate the vetting process, the accounts should be set to ‘public’ for ease of viewing.

The State Department cable notes that "The enhanced social media vetting will ensure we are properly screening every single person attempting to visit our country," (ICEF Monitor).

What will visa officers review during social media vetting?

• Posts and messages: Applicants’ posts and messages will be checked for any anti-U.S. sentiments, be it against its culture, government, institutions and values.
• Ideological leanings: Your political or ideological views expressed online will be assessed to check for political activism. Applicants who have a history of political activism will be flagged.
• Online footprint: The comprehensive vetting does not just include social media posts, but your entire online footprint or ‘online presence’ too. (U.S. Department of State)
• The screening will be applicable to both new and returning visa applicants.

What happens if you don’t make your account ‘Public’?

Not setting your profile to ‘public’ would be interpreted as an attempt to hide information and online activities that might not be in the best interest of the USA. This could lead to increased scrutiny or even visa rejection.
