Alternate Academic and Career Paths

I shall be telling this with a sigh;

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less travelled by,

And that has made all the difference.

-“The Road Not Taken.”

Engineers and business graduates from colleges and universities in India as well as abroad are being produced at a huge rate. There is a definite need for such engineers, managers, doctors and lawyers but what about energy managers, pilots, flight technicians, wildlife conservationists etc. There is a long list of alternate career opportunities and a huge demand for trained professionals in the mentioned areas.

This is the first in a series of articles, which will examine the various alternative career opportunities available and institutions abroad offering specialised courses in those subject areas.

Some of the popular alternate academic and career options abroad are as follows:

Energy Managers

The past ten years have seen enormous growth in pollution-awareness. Sustained efforts by the United Nations, Green Peace, the European Union and other international bodies have ensured that the super-powers and developing nations are held accountable for the damage to the environment caused in the name of growth and development. The Kyoto Protocol was adopted in December 1997, wherein 37 countries decided to take steps to cut down on greenhouse emissions. Its 1st commitment period was from 2008-2012. At Doha in 2012, the amendments to Kyoto Protocol for the 2nd commitment period (the Doha Amendment) were successfully adopted for the period 2013-2020. Unfortunately most of the steps agreed upon remain only on paper as the world battles global warming and depletion of the ozone layer.

Energy managers in large-scale industries monitor the emission of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. Students who are interested in protecting the environment and have a strong liking for science and nature can opt for courses in ‘Energy Management.’

Details of some institutions offering courses in Energy Management are given below:

  • The Center for Energy, Marine Transportation and Public Policy - The Center is part of Columbia University and offers a number of academic programs in Energy Management.
  • The Norwegian School of Management offers an executive MBA in Energy Management.
  • Murdoch University in Australia offers a degree in Sustainable Energy Management.
  • University of Wales, Newport offers a diploma in Energy Management.
