Study abroad from Nepal

Nepal is a beautiful landlocked Himalayan country, with a population of approximately 30 million (2016), where many tourists, year on year, flock to visit. Besides being an attractive destination, Nepal is known for its history and the Himalayan charm. Some people even believe that the Himalayan range have been habitable since Neolithic ages.

People from Nepal are known for their honesty and work ethics. They just love to work! And they are ready to travel miles in search of any job. But there are people who migrate overseas from Nepal with an ambition to study. In fact, the number of Nepali/Nepalese students choosing to study overseas has increased in years.

In 2015, the Ministry of Education recorded an increasing number of students from Nepal, heading to different countries for their higher education. Amongst other countries, the USA has been a major attraction amongst Nepalese students. Every student from Nepal who seeks admissions abroad must receive an NOC from the government, a legal certificate that lets any student move out of the country for their studies, provided the student has the right set of documents and an offer letter from the University [applied].

In 2016, 39,000 students from Nepal went overseas for their studies, as per UNESCO report. Although, this number is relatively low, when compared with other countries sending international students, there are prospects of a large number of students from Nepal seeking higher education abroad, in few years’ time.

In early 2017, a large number of international students were reported to migrate to Australia for their higher studies. The ratio of students heading to Australia was – 30% from China, 11% from India and 4% from Malaysia, Vietnam and Nepal.

Also, as per the 2017 Open Doors Report, the Nepali student population is the fastest-growing population amongst international students in the USA. The report released by SEVIS by the Numbers revealed that between May 2016 and May 2017, the number of Nepalese students heading to the USA increased by 18%.

But, which courses do Nepalese students look for to study abroad?

There are 4 fields quite popular amongst Nepali/Nepalese students who choose to study overseas

1. Engineering

Engineering is a widely sought-after field, not just by Nepali students but students all over the world. More number of job opportunities, internships and scholarships, industry experience and possibility to get permanent residency abroad are some of the reasons why this field is one of the most chosen amongst students from various countries.

2. IT and Computer Science

There are computer graduates all over India and abroad. Similarly, people from Nepal are getting attracted to this course. Considering we live in a digital age, IT and computer science sectors are booming with advanced technologies and ideas. Thus, this field is and will always remain an evergreen field amongst students and professionals.

3. Hospitality

The hospitality industry is expanding at a breathing rate. In every city, street or town, you will find some restaurants or cafes or boutique hotels emerging in no time. As long as people love to travel, the hospitality industry will never lose its charm.

This area is widely chosen by many Nepalese students, owing to its adequate practical exposure. A large number of Nepalese students are seen to be working in hospitality sectors due to the rising job opportunities.

4. Nursing

The healthcare sector is a vulnerable sector where changes are inevitable, and it needs constant attention. This is a widely chosen field of study by Nepalese students who want to specialise in nursing or healthcare practices.

Additional information: There are many universities abroad that have listed all information on their websites, for the students of Nepal. For example, the Deakin University and the University of Dundee

Why students from Nepal choose higher education abroad?

According to a report on the Kathmandu Post, many Nepalese students are willing to move out of the country in search of quality tertiary education. Theoretical approach to education, coupled with very less or no industry placements are some of the reasons that are driving away students from Nepal to other countries.

A majority of Nepalese students want to go abroad for a better education, leading to better employment opportunities. The political instability in the country, alongside other drawbacks, drives the students away from this beautiful land.  The less number of industry-driven knowledge and scant practical exposure are some of the other reasons that make the Nepali students consider education and a better life abroad.
