The UK does not fail to surprise us with its measures to support international students and its innovative ways to encourage talents, no matter which country they are from. When the whole world was hit by the pandemic, the UK announced and implemented several measures to ensure the well-being of students and to ensure that they do not miss out on any opportunities due to the border restrictions and vaccination mandates.

The number of UK visa applications by students has seen a steady increase over the years. In fact, as per a recent Times Higher Education report, India is expected to be the UK’s main source country for international students.

There are more reasons why students choose to study in the UK. Get to know them here:

The UK has launched a couple of changes to its immigration rules. Part of it is the new visa scheme that is highly specific to individuals. Note that this is not a UK study visa. Read further to understand more about the new visa scheme.

Which are the universities on the Global Universities List and how are they picked?

The UK Visas and Immigration maintains a ‘Global Universities List’ and only candidates with qualifications from these universities are eligible to apply for the new UK work visa called the HPI visa. The UK government will decide on the top 50 universities based on certain criteria.

These institutions should be listed in any two of the major three global rankings, namely

  • the Times Higher Education World University Rankings
  • the QS World University Rankings and
  • the Academic Ranking of the World Universities.

Remember that you should be looking at the list of that particular year when you graduated from your institution.

None of the institutions from India made it to the last 5 years’ list. However, universities from the USA, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Japan, Sweden, Canada, Singapore, France, China, Australia, Germany etc are on the list. Did you get your visa from any of these countries? It is worth checking whether your institution made it to the list!
