Where Nepali students study travel and hospitality courses abroad

The hospitality and tourism management / travel and hospitality industry is quite a favourite amongst the students of Nepal. Hospitality is a multi-billion-dollar industry, and it includes various domains of the service sector. In fact travel and tourism is one field of the hospitality industry.

The entire hospitality industry survives because of tourists and an increasing love amongst people of different countries towards other countries that are significantly and culturally important to them.

I know a few people who would travel almost every year to remote places, hopping from one town to another town, but with proper accommodation or rest, and proper planning. So the majority of these people look for budget hotels or motels that would provide safety and hygiene at affordable costs.

Hospitality industry includes the study of hotel management, hotel and tourism management or any other field in the hospitality sector. Usually, a hospitality unit includes theme parks, hotels, food services, travel and tourism, luxury or entertainment services, transportation and event planning.

A lot of people from Nepal find it interesting to pursue higher education in travel and hospitality or hospitality management abroad. This is because most Nepali people want to move out of the country due to lack of proper job opportunities. There are many institutes abroad that welcome students from Nepal to their tourism and hospitality courses every year.

Most employees in the hospitality sector work at various domains, such as tourism and leisure sectors, entertainment sectors, food service sectors, conferences and events and hotels. Some employees move on to fields like transport and other public sector jobs in universities and hospitals, during the latter part of their career.

The advantage of studying a hospitality course is most students who choose this field are equipped with adequate practical exposure, which helps them become job ready immediately upon completion of their courses.

Career opportunities

  1. Restaurant manager
  2. Travel agent
  3. Event planner
  4. Facilities manager
  5. Hotel/ motel manager

The salary of hotel management graduates ranges from $28,000 to $40,000 per year, i.e., INR 1820854 to INR 2601220, based on experience. And, of course, the salary differs from one profession to another, say a casino manager might earn more than a restaurant manager, and a hotel manager might earn more than a chef.

But the profession of a chef is dynamic since they can explore many other ways of earning, such as food writing or food critique, opening a mobile food store or starting a food app.

In India, there are n numbers of hotel and resort chains that are growing at a mad speed, besides the traditional Taj, Oberoi and Trident hotels. People travel for various reasons, for business, recreation, etc. and most people look for budget accommodations or, at least, lodging that has certain standards.

It is not easy to set up a hotel or small inn, considering the amount of time, money and legal issues that are involved. Anybody who opens a hotel or a restaurant these days is always reluctant to invest much, thinking of the loopholes in the business and increasing competitiveness. But if they are lucky, their investments never go in vain.

Also the increasing number of food delivery apps is giving a tough time to many local food stores or small joints that serve homemade meals at affordable costs. However, when it comes to set up a personal business, most people tend to think of ‘food businesses’. Even people who are not professional chefs or who do not have any experience in running a food business explore ways to invest in food business, be it running a vegetable market, growing organic vegetables in a private garden or owning a bakery.

An emerging field in the hospitality sector is ‘Timeshare’ which helps people use a part of a property as holiday home, by becoming a member of the time-sharing community. Another popular name of timeshare is ‘vacation ownership’. Under this scheme, a person is allowed to be the owner of part of a property for a certain time period, say a week, and is allowed to use it as a vacation home.

So what are your plans? Where do you see yourself in future, with a degree in hospitality? Do you want to work for a renowned hotel or food chain? Or do you wish to build your own business?
